I'm curious to know what you would consider an appropriate punishment in this case. Cleaning it at lunch? What if Little Miss Trouble goes home for lunch? What if Mom or Dad disagree with you? Staying after school to clean it up? Good luck.

I'm amazed that people are acting like this is some ranting, raving teacher who went from having no problems whatsoever with this student to "OMG YOU ARE DOODLING ON YOUR DESK, TIME FOR THE BRACELETS".

That being said, this definitely seems like a situation where the punishment does not fit the crime. I can't imagine teaching in a situation where the answer - however you arrived there - was "Call the cops the next time she doodles on her desk".
