and I wouldn't solely classify the republicans as masters of spin, every politician would fall under that category

I don't agree with your first premise. Just because Family Guy is an offensive show doesn't mean that every single thing they mention is automatically offensive. I've seen Peter play football on the show but I didin't see the NFL issuing a statement that it was offended that they were mentioned on the show.
Clearly, Family Guy knew that regardless of the context Palin would get offended that she was even mentioned and wanted the publicity of her complaining about it.
Personally I'm offended by the piece because I don't think morons like Sarah Palin should even be a household name and Family Guy only contributed to that.
However, in and of itself, there is nothing offensive about her child having Downs. Unnecessary to mention, sure. Offensive to bring up, in a non-offensive context, nope. If the show mentioned that Yao Ming is tall or that John Goodman is fat would posters still be offended? I doubt it. Why? Well I'm not even going to go there.

I was trying to be sarcastic, I guess. It's a fail.

Whoosh. I actually was kind of offended that you were calling me a moron. I totally missed the sarcasm. Maybe you need to use the sarcasm symbol like in Woohoo's avatar. (just in case that joke is lost on you a company is trying to popularize a symbol for sarcasm and there was a thread on it here at CP)
