I will add in a separate post that I don't believe Sayid has somehow been possessed by Jacob. He has the "sickness" that Rousseau talked about way back in the early seasons, the illness that her mates came down with that forced her to kill them. The same "sickness" that Claire came down with after she died at some point and wandered off into the jungle. I dunno when she might have died, as it will likely be revealed later, but possibly when the house collapsed on her when the military guys attacked Dharma-ville. This is the reason why I believe she was hanging out in the cabin with Christian. Christian, of course, isn't really Christian, but his body infected by the "sickness," which is why they only ever found his coffin, and never the actual man himself.
This is the reason Dogen (the Japanese leader of the Temple Others) stated that Sayid has a darkness growing in him. Like the other people who have come down with the sickness, they seemingly die, but then come back to life, appearing normal at first, but begin to show symptoms of not being themselves. They are meant to protect the island, and I think pretty soon Sayid will be showing the symptoms, too. The "poison" Dogen gave to Jack to give to Sayid was to kill the thing inside him.
Also, the Others always buried or cremated their dead, specifically. This was to make sure the dead body couldn't be infected with this "sickness". Burying the dead "deep," as they said, seems to be the only way, other than cremation, to stop the infection from happening.
Whether this is caused by Smokey or not remains to be seen. Either way, I think Sayid will be going rambo soon. Just my idea on the whole mess.
