Much of that is smoke and mirrors, by the way. They change how they count gigabytes in the finder, so that a gig is 1000 megs, not 1024. That, and on a fresh install, they don't include gigs worth of printer drivers anymore since the printer preference pane can now invoke System Update to pull down drivers from Apple.
I believe they did some other small tweaks to gain disk space like compressing the Apple-supplied apps, but on say, a 160 gig disk, 4 gigs of that space savings can now be attributed to a rounding error in how they count gigabytes.
