It depends on how far I am going on the trip. Lets say I am going for around a 80-100 km trip, I will definantly wear the bike shorts as they are so damn comfortable to wear suprisingly enough. Plus they really do cut down on wind resistance. If I am just going for a nice ride in the city I will throw some shorts on overtop.
But agreed no one wants to see it, but for logistical purposes it is sometimes necessary.
