Yeah, reading the articles I have from the time, there were competing issues. One group feared the destruction of the Victoria Park neighbourhood (lol), while another favoured the Saddledome location only if the city re-zoned Vic Park into a higher density neighbourhood. Or, effectively, they wanted 25 years ago what is only just starting now.
The community association especially fought the Revelstoke Acres site that was first proposed (North of the CPR tracks, apparently), council compromised on the current location, which people still whined about. Bob Hawkesworth opposed the final location, and said the Saddledome would become known as "Klein's Folly". (That, incidentally, shows how dumb Hawkesworth is to history - "Smythes Folly", Maple Leaf Gardens, was brilliantly planned and constructed. It is also noteworthy that both MLG and the Dome were built during a major recession/depression, and both served to boost their city's morale.)
They continued to fight on arguments of parking and traffic concerns, and the fact that proposed Stampede Park expansion was not dealt with, leaving the entire neighbourhood in limbo. I guess they were ultimately proven correct in their concerns, but as you say, it isn't like Vic Park was worth fighting for.
