You know, it was quite obvious at the time of these mammoth home run races, with statistics so far beyond the historic norm, that the key participants were juiced . . . . . . so I really don't think he should get any credit for 'exposing" something that was right in front of everyone's face screaming for attention.
Everyone, owners, management, union leaders, fans, media and participants themselves were aiding and abetting at the time by tacitly ignoring the obvious.
He does deserve credit for being basically the first to step outside of the comfort zone and essentially force the issue into discussion (the discussion being whether or not it is wrong to be juiced) . . . . . even if it should have been there from day one. That's when a topic most were comfortable with, now recognized as being among the darkest moments in baseball history but advertised as among the brightest at the time, started to get uncomfortable.
Even then it just looked like a cry for attention from a bit of a overgrown baby.
