The most striking memory I have of the G8 meeting in Calgary/Kananaskis a few years ago was a cordon of riot police ringing the Convention Centre in downtown Calgary, standing there bored out of their freaking minds because nothing was happening.
Whether there would have been protests in Calgary or not is definitely impossible to know. But I would put very long odds of there being protests of such a nature that they were international news.
And that is not to trash Vancouver. Ultimately, it is a cultural thing with the two cities. Protests and protesting is not, in itself, a problem. But the groups that bring the entire concept into disrepute are far more prevalent in Vancouver than anywhere else in this country, which is a shame.
