Most top movies involve violence and death, so it is hardly surprising that people want to see violence and death in real life too. It really isn't any different than the reasons why people always slow down to admire a big car crash.
Networks show this because people want to see it. There is no de-evolution happening here, simply a few people surprised to find that humanity isn't actually on the lofty pedestal they have placed it.
