Of course in retrospect it is easy to say that there is something wrong. However it's too easy IMO to say that "any idiot would know those columns shouldn't be there". (not saying you said that). I can't imagine that the engineers would have ignored those columns. I would assume that the most time spent on designing a course would be the calculations making sure the rider doesn't fly out of the course. But to be clear I am putting fault on anyone (luger or designer) because I don't know anything about it. But I would be very interested to hear an expert (luge designer) opinion.
