You would be amazed at the level of comprehension, compassion and absolute passion for life that some of those people have. They also typically understand that they don't fit the norm, and would do anything to be like you or me.

On the contrary my statement was a compliment. I have volunteered my time at a horse riding ranch with the mentally handicapped and they don't give a lick about dignity, or pride, or greed, or any of the other selfish emotions that we normal people worry about. They simply live for the moment, they enjoy life, they are more pure and innocent then you or I could ever be. Unfortunately they are also very limited in a world that was not made with the intention of them. Dignity, that is just some cop out thing someone made up to make themselves feel better. If more of us thought more on helping others and forgiving others and doing the right thing and just living life for the pure pleasure of being alive instead of protecting our "dignity" the world would be a better place.
