If you watch videos on YouTube about marines or army in Afghanistan or Iraq, most of their shots are well placed and aimed. There is no shooting from the hip. Has there been a fundamental change in the armies?
I remember reading that the reason 3 round burst was placed on m16's because of the amount of rounds spent in Vietnam. I don't know how true that is, but perhaps after Vietnam an emphasis was placed on fire control?

Training was a lot different and not as good back then, especially in the U.S. Army. The concept was maximum firepower, especially since they were mostly fighting an enemy that they couldn't see.
Discipline and especially fire discipline wasn't as good.
The Marines were an entirely different story, they had to carry ammo into the battle so they were careful with its use.
