Obviously hostels are not the best option, but when someone is on a tight budget, what options are there?

I would use hostels when I was younger. Now that Im travelling with the misses, we wouldn't touch a hostel with a 10 foot pole. It all depends on your budget though- we typically budget around 200/night for hotels, but there are a large variety of prices out there.
