My family recently adopted a dog that has been a neighbors for years. We've known him since he was a brand new puppy, and now that he is ours I know that his time will come. He is 7 or 8 now, and I absolutely dread losing him one day.
All this talk reminds me of the movie My Dog Skip...absolutely the most heartbreaking and sad movie I have ever seen.
I wish you all the best, as I'm sure it's going to be tough saying good-bye to your friend. Take comfort in the fact that he is no longer suffering, and that you are doing the right thing. I am sure it is hard as hell, but you will pull through stronger because of it.
