Before your time apparently . . . . . google Halifax Riot.
Wow. Definitely before my time.... before my father's time.

And I guess it's something people just don't talk about. Lived there 24 years and never heard a whisper about it before.

I'm not presenting this as my opinion, but this was what one of the folks that I go to coffee break said today:
"I'm not giving one red cent to the Red Cross for this mess. This is on the U.S. to fix. Their government doesn't want to pay to upgrade the levees, but rather divert the money to homeland security. Their government has been slow to react to the situation, hampered by the fact that most of their soldiers and a fair chunk of their National Guard is in Iraq. Why couldn't they get the sandbags in place? Well, where do you think the military helicopters are? The people of Louisiana CHOSE the situation they are now in. They made their bed. Let them sleep in it."

Obviously not my opinion, as I have sent $50 to the Red Cross and think everyone should send what they can afford. I think these people need help regardless of their political beliefs. And I think the Red Cross is doing everything in their power to help these people. Just thought it an interesting POV.
