Those prices lasted for half the day. There were so many rumors going around that the state was going to run out of gas due to the two main pipelines that supply Atlanta being down due to the Hurricane. It was also being reported that flights may be canceled out of the airport due to jet fuel running out. So mass hysteria broke out.
My brother in-law said it took him double the time to get home, not because the freeway was packed but because of traffic jams on the side streets due to all the people trying to fill up. Many gas stations sold out of their $5 gas. Then the governor warned stations that gas gouging would not be tolerated and magically prices were back down to ~$3/gallon.
