IMO outright falseification was not the issue. It was and is efforts to suppress critics; holding back of raw data and the methods of what they call "homonogization"; possible cherry-picking of data; holding back of their statistical formulas and methods; subversion of the peer review process and overall political activism covered in a thin veneer of science.
Whatever happened to the basic principal of correlation does not imply causation? This seems to have been thrown out the window in climate science.
Canadian climateologist Andrew Weaver recently came out and said that the IPCC has crossed the line into political advocacy:
