You have to take into account the extreme desperation these people already lived in before this disaster. Can you expect these people not to loot, when they are so poor, they couldn't even get out when the evactuation was called?

That's a good point and all, and FA also made a good point about civil disorder, but considering the amount of death, destruction and total lack of basic services, the looting of computers and TVs seems to me to that it should be very low on the list of priorities.

Maybe it's just the media playing it up but it seems like the looting is getting a disproportionate amount of attention considering all the drowning/dying/potential for disease/homelessness/violence... that is going on.

Even from a cold-hearted economic sense, the cost of any looting will be microscopic compared to what will be spent to clean the mess up.
