Ha, weird huh? I lived here for 6 years without a car so it's definitely not necessary (this is actually my first car period...and I'm 29), or in most cases recommended. I actually got it to get out of the city, not drive inside it, as we wanted to go on day/weekend trips more often. I don't drive it inside of the city that often since it's easier to just take public transit 90% of the time, so I spend most of my time just parking it from one side of the street to the other.
Driving in NY isn't that hard, you get used to it pretty quickly. Finding parking on the other hand can get pretty stressful.
