You could always go overkill and buy a Sequoia like we did. I know the hippies won't like it, but my wife does. Tonnes of room. Can haul anything.
A better option could be the X-trail. My cousin has one of those, and there's tonnes of room for a bench for the kids, and then room in the back for the dog and strollers and whatever else. I think it hauls pretty well too.
