A pickup truck seems like a pretty bad option. Sure you can "haul stuff", but unless you're going to throw all the kids in the back, you're not going to get that much more interior space up front than the mazda 3. It just seems like wasted space.
The new Honda Crosstour seems like it could be up your alley. It's an Accord, built with the purpose of providing versatility and space. Not the prettiest car around though.
The Volvo Xc90 is a pretty good option too if you can afford it. Jeremy Clarkson has one (he's had 3)!
