The fact that 300 isn't nearly as good as Gladiator, LotR, or Braveheart (or Avatar, for that matter) doesn't mean it can't be included in the discussion: 300 was extremely good at its epic moments: speeches, battle sequences, memorable deaths, (which was the reason I listed it along with the others, because I wasn't talk about film quality, just epic moment quality), it's just the some of the acting was pretty ham-fisted, the overall pacing was poor, and the storyline was weak.

I still think my comparison works. Just change the genre from movie epics to successful rock bands of the last four decades.
