Not really. I was just comparing recent epics that popped into my head. I could throw Alexander and Troy (in my opinion, the worst two epics in recent cinema), or Arthur (a solid B-) into the mix as well. The fact that 300 isn't nearly as good as Gladiator, LotR, or Braveheart (or Avatar, for that matter) doesn't mean it can't be included in the discussion: 300 was extremely good at its epic moments: speeches, battle sequences, memorable deaths, (which was the reason I listed it along with the others, because I wasn't talk about film quality, just epic moment quality), it's just the some of the acting was pretty ham-fisted, the overall pacing was poor, and the storyline was weak.
