Saw it last night in Imax 3D. Pretty mixed feelings about it. I have lots of criticisms with the plot and the writing in retrospect, but few of them were big enough to take me out of the engagement with the film. But the literal deus ex machina ending on par with Tolkien's taxi-eagles was a little annoying. The characters were very good for this type of film, especially Weaver's character and the main villain. 3D was well done, and I liked the fact that it was used more-so for the added depth rather than throwing things at the screen. The character design reminded me a lot of the martians from Futurama, yet they were extremely well-rendered and expressive.
A good epic will usually bring tears to my eyes a couple times or give me chills, and despite all the spectacular visuals, this had nothing that evoked a psychosomatic response for me; not the incredible scenery, not the deaths of secondary characters, not the supposedly emotional speeches. I enjoyed it, but wasn't moved by it the way that I thought I would be; it didn't have any of those Braveheart/Gladiator/LoTR/300 moments that just hit me in the heart.
