Whether it was "official Mormon doctrine" or not, I can't say, but it was definitely believed by my mother and her family. Also note I have never seen these undergarments directly, but can see them on men wearing business shirts, if you know what to look for, an inside joke the Mormons call the eternal smile.

Basically, I was told these undergarments had a couple purposes. The first and obvious one is that it imposes a level of modesty on the wearer due to the cut of them. The next one was that they are embroidered with little "charms" in spots such as over the heart, and that these underwear our supposed to protect you from harm. My Mom told me, as I was slacked jawed hearing about them for the first time, that there are stories of people in car crashes where they have been burned in places except where the undergarments were.
