Avatar was not a masterpiece. It did, however, change the way movies are made.
The CGI was also amazing that is true.
It think once the new technology is combined with a movie with all the other elements that make a movie good (plot, acting, dialogue, etc) you will see a true masterpiece.
Edit:
To put this another way. A masterpiece should be a near perfect film, or at the very least one that is not easily improved on.
Looking at the plot, acting, and dalogue in Avatar, there are many things that could be improved.
