Let me put it this way. I could ad 3d visual effects to Spiderman 3 or Batman and Robin to make the whole experience entertaining. I would never ever refer to those as good movies though. Avatar is a mediocre movie with great effects.

I could not disagree more strongly.
The CGI in Avatar was BRILLIANT. I will refer especially to the scene of the Shuttle landing at the military base on Pandora. I looked around trying to find a way to tell that what I was watching wasn't real and I couldn't. It looked pretty damn real.
Avatar is not just about 3D. They have come far closer to photo-realistic CGI than any movie or game ever made prior. They have also made leaps and bounds forward in terms of motion/performance capture by adding a facial movement detection aspect to the whole body motion capture.
On top of all that, I know a lot of people dump on the story. I will say again that the story was very well executed, the characters were good, and the acting was very good. These aspects simply lacked originality.
You vastly underestimate Avatar.
You can't just slap 3D onto an otherwise awful movie and make it a $2 billion dollar movie. I even have a perfect
example.
