You are thinking of it the wrong way.
You are going to spend that money regardless if you are getting points or not. You don't "buy" those points you are getting them for free when you shop.
It's spend $20 and get a free air mile
OR
Spend $20 and get .15 extra
Here, I have taken the following example from the airmiles store:
An Ipod touch is $199 to buy anywhere
It costs 3300 miles from the airmiles store
3300 miles gets you $345 with me
Would you rather an ipod touch or $345?
If you like your miles keep them. If you like cash I am willing to give it. If cash was such a good deal, air miles would be writing cheques instead of making you get other stuff.
