It's not a fair comparison. If Leno leaves the network, then Conan inherits Leno's audience, brings his own Late Night audience with him, and has a shot at building a new audience. Instead Leno took his audience with him, alienated the new audience with his awful schtick, and left Conan with only his Late Night audience.

When Leno took over from Carson, he inherited Carson's audience and had a good three years to build his core audience. Leno's ratings were bad when he originally took over back in the 90s and he had much less to compete with back then, let alone a crappy talk show preceding his.

Conan has 2 other network shows to compete with, plus a cable talkshow market that didn't exist in the early 90s. Apples to oranges.
