The concrete pads also tend to have rebar in them.
Like I said, use a pin locator. It also helps if it is an experienced person using it as they can usually tell the difference between a signal emitted from different metal features in the ground and that of something small like a ring. Regular metal detectors really lack the range and just detects if metal is present. Pin locators (if used by someone who has experience), can give you a better idea of how much metal and how deep, and are also more precise (the signal does not fan out like a metal detector).
