I agree that they should stay away from Khan. However I think the reason deep down I prefer Star Trek II is because it is equal parts King Lear, Paradise Lost and Moby Dick. I enjoy and like the new movie, it doesn't have the layers.
Edit: Than again none of the other moves (save perhaps The Undiscovered Country which was just a Cold War ending allegory) had the layers so. Or tried to and failed. So I'm probably making something out of nothing.
