I also use Gaim if I only need text communication - it's very handy, and it's free.

There is also gAIM which free and contains all chat applications at once; its the one I use. Google also used a pre-existing protocal for their messenger (Jumble), which gAIM supports. I was able to use Google Talk with gAIM without having to install anything. I'm chatting with msn and Google Talk buddies in the same window right now.

I believe that voice chat is also available in MSN as well as Yahoo! (although Yahoo is way better than MSN's offering). I'm excited to see if the Google version works well or not.
