I was just there last week, and we decided to check out Freemont Street. It was "OK". Definitely a little more seedy than the strip. There were more than a few religious fanatics preaching up and down with "repent" signs and the like. The light show overhead, as mentioned previously, was pretty dated and I found it to be kind of cheezy. I don't necessarily regret going, but if I was pressed for time and/or had other things to do, I wouldn't worry about missing it.

A friend that I was with was trying to find some low-stakes blackjack, and the gambling wasn't any cheaper (for blackjack at least) than on the strip.

Cirque shows are good. On this past trip, I saw "Love" and if you're a Beatles fan, I would highly recommend it. Seems to be continually sold out through, so you'll want to book in advance. My wife has seen Ka and said that it was pretty good too.

I'd say that you can probably find enough other things to do than hitting Freemont Street, but if you still feel compelled, I think that the taxi was about $20 each from Excalibur, so it isn't like it'll break you, especially if you're with a few others.

Edit: And yes, you can definitely to both in the same evening if you'd like to. Las Vegas is one of those places where they days are a lot longer than anywhere else!
