There are no rules, but I believe the tradition of thanking people for their good service at Christmas time goes a long way to making people feel appreciated, and strengthens the relationship.
If you can't afford to give money... there's no problem. Even giving things like baking goods, homemade candy etc. I'm sure would be appreciated.
