Just a couple thoughts here.
I used to own a 4x4 '01 S10. I once had your line of thinking, but eventually it changed and I sold it. I used to always want to haul things as well, but most of them were small, such as the things you listed. The problem I had was unless I bought a canopy/topper for the back, then everything was in the open and I couldn't leave it unattended. Sure was handy for the odd big item when I went shopping, but otherwise, most of the stuff was packed in the cab (leaving the initial reason for owning the truck no longer applicable). I was hesitant to get rid of it because of winter, but I've actually found my subaru legacy better to get around in than the S10. Make sure you weigh your options with a small SUV.
