1) The Running Room offers training programs tied around specific running events. They probably have something for the Melissa. Some races also have free online training programs.

2) You will want to buy a Garmin 305 with the heart rate monitor. These are about $170 at Costco. It includes software that will track your progress. (I use the web based version.)

3) During your intial training, you will want to keep close tabs on your heart rate. On the Garmin, you can customize the display so that the heart range is displayed in large numbers on the display so that it is easy to read. Your target training range will depend on your age.

4) If you are carrying around some extra pounds, weight loss will also be a huge factor in achieving faster race times.

5) Don't overdo it. Anytime anything starts to hurt, ease off. Pushing yourself too hard is counterproductive. Injuries will hugely impede your progress.

6) If you have feet problems, consider orthotics.

7) Good fitting shoes. Go to a running store (Gords, Running Room) for help.

8) Stretching.
