Now they may have improved the technology some since a couple years ago, but that's still alot of engine battery's being replace creating a large amount of waste.

I've seen many articles claiming that the pollution impact from the mining, manufacture, and transport of the nickel for the manufacture of the nickel metal hydride batteries of the Prius is more harmful to the environment than your average gas guzzler. Hopefully Toyota comes out with a lithium solution sooner or later.
