Outside of Barney HIMYM is 100% friends, there are episodes that are completely lifted from old friends episodes.

I like HIMYM and think its very funny and better than friends, but the similarities are there. I was just giving a show to compare it too, its more of a comedy drama than a straight comedy like Always Sunny or the Big Bang theory
