I actually hope they pick up where it left off. There was a lot of problems for Dexter that Rita's death will have caused ... his alibi is non-existant, he will show little remorse, Masuka saw Rita kissing the neighbour and told him about it, they were in therapy ... all sorts of signs point to Dexter doing this.
On the other hand you make a good point, if the timeframe rolls forward you can start to develop more of a Harry/Dexter relationship between Dexter and his son.
Personally I'd go the "Dexter as the possible killer being hounded by Quinn" angle. Sure it's a little bit like Dokes in season 2, but I'm sure they could work with it.
