There is actually a place in IE that allows you access to disabling or enabling addons or BHOs, or ActiveX controls, etc.
They seem to change it's location with every new version, but it's usually called Manage Addons or something like that. Anyway, you don't need to run third-party software for this kind of thing. A lot of times, that third-party software just ends up installing its own stuff into IE, which screws things up even more.

Edit: Actually, I just fired up Windows to look for the setting. If you're running IE8, then go into the Tools menu and pick Internet Options. Go to the Programs tab, and click on the Manage Addons button at the bottom.
You should get a window like this one:
If you're not sure which items you can disable, just take a screen shot showing what you have in your Addons window and post it here.
