I don't know if their existance is at stake, however I do think that the best thing that could happen to them would be a Kim Campbellesque destruction at the polls where they finish a distant distant third.

This would force them to lose the Canadian elite ruling party attitude and the arrogance that pervades their ranks. they would need to re-invent the Liberal Party thought processes and become a force of change instead of a force for stagnation, negative inertia and cynicism.

As much as we hate Jack Layton, he has done a pretty good job of acting like an opposition party and rebuilding the NDP and showing some basic leadership skills.

Ignatief hasn't done that, but if his destruction and departure leads to the cleaning of the senior ranks and I'm looking at you Rae and Goodale and others, then its a positive thing for them to get creamed.
