Exactly.
It is a story because we, the overwhelming majority of the common folk, demand it's prominence. We're insatiable.
And this is nothing new.
Ever since two people could spread gossip about the third guy sharing the cave, it's been around. That's who we are. Shameful? No. Humans are curious and, as Captain Picard said when pleading for the lives of his crew under threat from the Xenophobes,
"humans cannot resist a mystery. We must know the answer."
In summary, using Picard's pleading with the Xenophobes as an example and as Tiger is finding out to his peril, don't leave clues around for people to puzzle over. We're all over that like a cheap tent at midnight.
It sells only because we want it not because it's fed to us.
It's why the Tiger thread has 36,000 views and the "Good News" thread has a fraction of that. It's not so much the building up and tearing down theory as it an insatiable desire to know what's coming next.
And, as Troutman said, this is a situation of self-immolation. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
