I don't think the show will last more than another season or two. Six seems like a likely number judging from similar series on Show, HBO, etc...
I haven't been that on-edge during a season finale/episode since the Sopranos series finale... from the moment Dexter killed Trinity (and when Tony walked into the diner), every new screen shot I expected a massive twist. Except Dexter blew my mind and the Sopranos made me blow a gasket.
I really like that the writers took this angle. It's almost like hitting the reset button on all the humanity that Dexter has found and built up in his life. Although I will be really sad when the show ends, I would also love to see Dexter break the code next year and kill with vengeance. Ultimately it would lead to him being caught and the writers could explore Dexter before the show (when he went through med-school, when he started killing frequently, what his total numbers are...) during interrogation.
Awesome stuff. Now my watch is counting down to September (I hope Dexter doesnt take an extended hiatus like the Sopranos did either... I can't wait!)

I suggested this as the possible season finale twist (well, I suggested Cody or Astor), but it was poo-pooed as "too taboo." I think it would be awesome. To see Dexter struggle with his knowledge that he had a large role in creating Harrison's dark passenger and contrasting the way Harry approached raising Dexter to how Dexter was going to raise Harrison...
