Walking 9 holes either carrying your clubs or using a push cart will burn around 720 calories. So 36 holes of golf will burn roughly 2900 calories. The time frame is a huge, huge factor. In the time it takes to play 36 holes of golf you could burn about 1500 calories cleaning the house or playing croquet. I can burn as many calories sleeping for 4 hours as I do running for 4 km, that doesn't mean they're anywhere in the same realm of exercise.

The caloric expenditure from golf is roughly akin to such activities as freethrow shooting, fishing, hackey sack, table tennis, and light yardwork.
