Not browser is perfectly safe, but the easiest computers to hack are owned by the most vulnerable users who generally use IE since it is already on their computer.
You can alter Firefox so that it looks and behaves very similar to IE (if you so desire).
Myself, I started using it when it was called Firebird (version 0.61) and have been happy with it ever since.
