Moon, BS, you're better than that light assessment. Aybar, granted, isn't a power threat. He is, however, A future multible GGlover, plus a speed and an OBP threat. He had a fantastic year as a 25 yo. Pair that with Hill and that defensively is solid for at least 4 controllable years at an affordable rate. Put that in the leadoff position and you have the makings of a threat of speed on the basepaths to offset the former notions of a slow Jays lineup. Gathright is a nice option of the bench. He will mean more to a new Jays philo than initially considered. YOu say that Saunders isn't a top of the rotation starter, but I disagree.
Joe Saunders has good numbers, but will now get to pitch against the best. I would love to have him as a veteran compliment to Romero, Marcum, Cecil, Zep, Tallet, Rich. Add that to Saunders and perhaps we may have the makings of an interesting Rotation. Sure, Roy is a better option, but do you want to keep giving an out away every nine AB's like the NL? JMac isn't a contenders option at SS. Gonzalez was for a confident Marlins squad, but for the Bo Sox last year he was thrust into a role he couldn't succeed in.
Set yourself up the middle with proven talent and find production for your OF spots, Get quality arms then contend for the Ploff's.
I digress, Aybar in the 1 spot is nice with our other hitters. Our pitching depth is intriguing. NOthing is proven but a lot is to be gained. We don't have the sheen of the yanks, the fans of the sox, the talent of the rays and the surprise of the O's, but the jays, if all goes right, have a better shot without halladay if you consider our present and future SS options. Good D behind our pitching futures is a good recipe if you ask me.
The jays need to develope a structure like what has worked for teams like the rays, whom have made it to the WS recently despite the lineups and challenges of the Yanks 'n sox. Their immutable traits are speed, pitching and youth. Hill and Lind are our youth and power, we have snider and dopriak, the rotation, so there are pieces to succeed, but will AA be able to configure for optimal outpup. NOw, we need speed, we have youth with our pitching.
