I'm gonna take every oppurtunity like this to pimp the Windows Home Server. This thing is cheap and freakin brilliant. You can buy a pre built one for around $400 or buy the O/S for a spare rig you have kicking around (the hardware requirements are really low). There is naturally going to be an initial setup but once running, you can pretty much leave it alone. The reason it's valuable to your grandparents is it automatically backs up each machine, in its entirety, each night. It obviously has a ton of higher functions as well but this is the biggest. It would also allow you to connect to each computer in their house remotley if they need your assistance.

This honestly has to be one of Microsofts most under appreciated products.

If you are sure you just want an external drive, that can be done pretty easily for around $130 for the HD enclosure and a 1TB drive. ME also has decent Network attached storage, I'm pretty sure it has some sort of backup program as well. Buying it and a HD or two will run a bit cheaper than the WHS. Only drawback to the network attached storage is I think at one point they were easily hacked but I doubt that's much of an issue anymore.
