I think Windows has something in it to force Windows to use IE as the Hotmail client.

I have a similar thing with my IM messenger program Trillian, when I click the MSN notification to tell me I have new Hotmail mail it launches in IE every time even though Firefox is my default browser.

There's probably a way to change it, bit it'll be some deep setting with Windows; I don't think it's a Firefox thing.
