I've been thinking about how the different genres of popular music have fared over the years. IMHO:

The best

Metal if you haven't listened to metal in the last 10 years you've really missed out. Bands have been aggressively pushing all creative boundaries. The variety and quality is staggering, and it's coming from all over the world. It's now impossible to talk 'metal' without first defining what type of metal your talking about.
Standouts Strapping young lad, Mastodon, Lamb of god, converge, dillinger escape plan, Dimmu Borgir, Mars Volta, DragonForce etc. etc. etc.

electronica Electronic music is thriving both as fuel for raves and festivals, and also as an effective vehicle for artists to explore new territory.
Standouts Mushroomhead, MGMT, TV on the radio, animal collective, Bjork

The good

Pop Pop has had an incredible change of face since the days of boy bands and britney. The genre has really fleshed out and is gushing with talent. Even the bottom end of the talent pool is miles above the venga bus.
Standouts Mika, MIA, Empire of the sun, Lady gaga, JT

indy rock mopey geeks with guitars made some of the most inspired rock of the decade. It's also produced a lot of music I hate, so I'm not letting it on 'the best' list
Standouts Modest Mouse, The shins, Arcade fire, white stripes, My morning jacket

Needs to improve

hip hop Still alive and well, but is slow in moving on from the 'thug' era. The genre wasn't able to replace Eminem and Jay-z when they took time off.
Standouts Jay-z, Eminem, Atmosphere, Outkast, K-Os, Kanye west

punk Started the decade off very well, but is having a dry spell now that post-punk and emo have run out of ideas
Standouts Thursday, At the drive in, My Chemical romance, Fugazi

Is anyone even trying anymore?

hard rock It was the Nickelback brand that ruled, driving out talent in droves and leaving only room for imitators. At least we should get another Tool album in about 5 years or so.
Standouts The darkness, Andrew WK, Tool

Country Anyone worth a damn in country is dead or will be soon.
Standouts Corb Lund, *insert unknown, real country here*

I'm painting with a pretty wide brush here, but thats how I see it.
