Its funny I have always viewed people's birthdays as more important, more individual and just for them and then I do give nice gifts. I was raised to view Christmas as a time to help those less fortunate not just greed and 'more, more, more'. Someone said earlier in the thread that they will preach 364 days a year and give good gifts at Christmas (or something along those lines) - well I will do the exact opposite. I think I know which I prefer. My views probably come with my advanced age. Youth, quite often, can be a bit self indulgent.

Why do presents = greed to you? What do you have against thinking about something somebody might actually want, and putting a smile on their face by giving it to them?
If you want to donate to charity, go for it. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anybody on this board that doesn't donate to charity in one form or another at some point - or multiple points - throughout the year. It's just unbelievably douchy to give something to charity in my name, then expect me to thank you for it.
